Getting there fast

This build is coming close to the end, my captured Sd Kfz 11 late half track is nearing completion at this point, although every time I really look at it I can see just how much more I need to do. There's quite a bit actually, and this is just sub assemblies posed for the photo.

I've been sidetracked with other stuff lately (my 1/72 Finemolds Millennium Falcon) but managed to put in a few nights on this to get where I am now, at any rate it's begining to look the part.

Enjoy/Comment/Critique.

  1. Ken,

Man I really enjoy your work. I've been following you (not to stalker-ish) on youtube, missing lynx and more recently here. I'm always impressed and very inspired!

I've building scale models for about a year and a half. I've got a lot of the building techniques down but I'm still having so issues with the painting process. Do you have a set routine when it comes to painting, weathering and what not?

I know you're busy. So anything helps. Thanks for the inspiration! I look forward to seeing more of your work.

    Cheers!

  3. Travis,

thanks for following along, it's always very flattering to hear that my work is inspiring to someone.

My set routine changes with every build. Of course some things remain constant ( I always decal before weathering) but the weathering process for me is always a back and forth process. I find that following a strict regiment limits the outcome to be exactly like the last one and I am always trying to change/improve the final look.

This has been especially true lately with the flood of new AK products. I highly recommend you try to watch the AK weathering technique DVD with Miguel Jimenez and study his techniques over and over. The best way to learn is to actually put them to practice on a model and experiment, even if you learn by making mistakes. I know I've made many in my day.

    Thanks again,

    Ken

  4. Hey Ken,

Firstly, really amazing work, it comes to life in the detail. It really is inspiring to see what can be achieved! Your finishes really are legendary, truly.

I know this is a stupid question but what scale do you build to?

I started building recently and seeing what you created is really encouraging and i know it's going to be a long and time consuming effort to get any good at it, as I am not artistically minded! But its a hobby that I enjoy and I'm sure I'll get there in the end!
I used Tamiya 1/48 scale, but being an South African means being limited in what is available on the marked for extra detailing etc.

Anyway I really think that the work you do on the models is awesome and I can't wait to see what is still to come.

    Cheers,
    Kallie

  5. Hi Kallie,

Thanks so much for the kind words and encouragement. It is always a great pleasure to 'hear' when someone really likes what you do.

All of my armor builds are 1/35 scale, it is the scale I started with when I was a youngster and it is probably the most popular when it comes to what's available in the market. 1/48 is catching up though, there are many more kits and aftermarket products in that scale than there used to be.

If you enjoy the hobby, then you are here for the right reasons, the rest will come naturally over time and with practice.

Thanks so much for visiting and commenting, it is truly appreciated.

  8. Amazing work. I know the competition in the contest is really stiff but it looks like you are on it :)))

  9. Thanks Kasper, the competition is very stiff but the ones that I fear most are all of the entries that haven't posted any work in progress threads. :)

I hope to have the final photos of this entry up here soon.

    Cheers,

  12. Thanks for looking. Just applied an oil wash to it.. I'll leave it a couple of days before I try a flat varnish then attempt a pin wash.

One thing that came out quite well was trying to achieve chipped paint with salt grains. Came off not too bad with a tooth pick to leave nicely chipped paint. Maybe it was luck!
